I have never really liked earrings, yeah I know – totally weird for a woman right? I do have a couple holes in each ear, but I always just wore the same earrings (tiny silver hoops and studs) without ever taking them out. I am quite plain when it comes to fashion. I was a tom boy as a child. I hated dresses and anything pink. But having a daughter has really changed me. My daughter is now 4 yrs old (going on 5) and she is a total girly-girl. She loves dresses and jewelry and of course her favorite color is pink. 🙂
The only jewelry that I really enjoy is beads. I have been collecting them for several years as well as designing and creating my own necklaces. I love being able to design something that matches an outfit and then if I get sick of it after a few years, I just un-do it and start over with something else.
But a recent wedding sparked my interest in earring wearing. I purchased a pair of earrings that really were not my usual style. They were totally flashy and glitzy. But when I put them on with my dress, I actually looked really nice. What do you think?
From then on, I decided that I would try to wear earrings more. My daughter was thrilled because she does not yet have her ears pierced. That is a whole other blog post discussion. I will just simply say that I want my daughter to DECIDE about getting her ears pierced and if she does decide that it would be something special because that is how it was for me.
Anyway, I purchased some earring making materials like earring wires and hooks and all that good stuff. So far I have made about 5 pairs of earrings. My 2 older children (4 & 6) also enjoy working with me and creating their own designs. It is so cute. Just the other day my son was helping me and he asked me why he couldn’t wear earrings. Man was that a tough one to answer. I just said that dangly earrings are for girls. But then he responded with the obvious “Well I see dudes wearing earrings” (“Dudes” is his name for older boys or teens…not sure where he picked that one up from. LOL) Then I said, yes, but they usually only wear one earring on one side and they usually wear smaller earrings not dangly ones. He left it alone after that (Thank God). I could use some advice there. What would you respond to a child asking about earrings and why men wear them?
So, here are a few of my designs. What do you think? Sorry about the picture quality. My camera sucks.
A few people told me that I should open up an ETSY store (online jewelry store for the DIY jewelry maker) – yeah, would be fun, but I honestly don’t have the time. And the shipping would make me totally crazy. It might be something I would consider when my kids are a little older though. It could be there little business (my little child entrepreneurs). 🙂
In my next post, I am going to share with you a little DIY project on how to make a simple earring organizer. And you all know me – always looking for ways to simplify life without spending a lot of money. So stay tuned for that!
Do you wear earrings? Do you wear them everyday or only on special occasions? And what type of earring designs / style do you prefer? I would love to hear from you!
