Baby FINALLY Mastered Eating from a Spoon

May 24, 2009 by Painter Mommy 1 Comment

gerber-organic-1st-sweet-peas-largeI am sooooo happy to announce that my baby (now 7 months old) has finally gotten the hang of eating baby food.  I don’t know if you remember when I wrote about 3 or 4 weeks ago and shared about what a challenge it was to get my baby boy to eat from a spoon.

Well, I got lots of great feedback from all of your moms and I just wanted to say thankyou.  It was not easy at all.  Each day I had to deal with a huge mess from all the baby food that was spit out.  I had to pry the spoon into his mouth as he clenched his gums refusing to eat.  Most of the food wound up on his face, on his bib, and smeared all over the highchair. But I was determined.  Every single day I sat him in his high chair and tried to feed him.

I started him with vegetables as many of you suggested and the only one that he even remotely enjoyed was peas.  So, we fed him peas everyday because that was the only thing he didn’t spit out.  I think it is kinda funny actually.  He didn’t like any of the fruits – only peas.  LOL

Well, about a week ago, I sat him down to eat and I was shocked to see his mouth WIDE open waiting for me to pop the spoon into his mouth.  I can’t tell you how excited I was.  And ever since then, whenever I sit him down to eat he actually WANTS to eat and he opens his mouth so big it makes me laugh.  I have been in Mommy Glory.

Here he is, isn’t he ADORABLE?

Oh yeah, FINALLY my 7 month old is EATING from a SPOON!  I thought it would never come.  No more fighting, no more dreading – I can finally sit down and enjoy this baby food phase.  Yes, there is still a lot of cleaning up to do, of course, but it is nothing in comparison to those few weeks of baby food frustration.

So, am I the only mom whose baby didn’t start eating from a spoon until 7 months old?  Am I the only mom whose child took almost a month of frustration to finally start eating baby food like a normal baby?  Tell me your stories!

Is My Baby Ready to Eat Baby Food?

April 18, 2009 by Painter Mommy 12 Comments

ready to eat baby food

My son is almost 6 months old.  He is a big boy to say the least.  I am not sure how much he weighs now, but at his 4 month visit, he was almost 18 pounds.  He is in the top 90th percentile for weight.  He has always been formula fed.  I would’ve loved to be able to breastfeed, but I am unable to, due to some health issues.

We found out in the hospital right after I had my son that he is lactose intolerant.  So he has been on Enfamil Lactose Free ever since.

On a side note – Enfamil is actually discontinuing the Lactose Free in May.  So we have been going crazy trying to gather cases of formula from every store that carries it.  We need 180 cans to last us until he is a year old.  What a crazy dillema this has been for us.  We finally were able to get one of the Toys R Us stores that we went to, to order 15 cases for us from an out of state store.  They are shipping it to them to give to us.  Thank God!

OK, so as I was saying, my baby is a big boy.  My other two were always small, so this was quite odd actually.  But of course every baby / child is different.

Now that my baby is hitting the 6 month mark, I am thinking about introducing food to him.  I have already started adding some baby cereal into his milk, especially at night so that he will sleep better.  This really has helped.  He really isn’t showing signs of being hungry though, so I am not sure whether or not I should wait a while longer.

I have read that you can introduce some baby foods as early as 4 months.  I may have even done that for my other 2, but for some reason my brain is a fog and I can’t remember exactly when I started giving them food.

I know I have a lot of mom readers out there and I would love to get your opinions / thoughts on this subject.  What did you do?  What foods did you start with?  How old was your baby?

I really appreciate your input.  I don’t want to push things too soon, but also don’t want to hurt my baby by not feeding him if he needs it.  What are the signs?

OK, well, thanks again my virtual mommy friends!  I will wait to hear from you and then decide.  Can’t wait to hear your comments!
