Unless you are a mom of a little one, you are probably thinking why in the world do I want to read THIS post? Who REALLY wants to talk about BABY POOP?
Well, the reason I am bringing up this stinky subject is because my 7 month old recently starting pooping ALL THE TIME. He has been eating baby food for about a month now, but last week, he has decided that he would like me to change his diaper every two hours (at least that is how I feel) LOL
Prior to this poopy week, we were going through only around 5-6 diapers a day. But NOW, it is DOUBLE that. Everytime I turn around I smell poop! I look at my son and he gives me a big grin and it almost seems like he is saying – “Sorry mom, but I am a baby, ya know!” Yeah, it is cute – but come on! Mommy is TIRED of changing POOPY DIAPERS! LOL
My other 2 children NEVER pooped this much, so I decided to do some research on this wonderful poopy subject and I found some great stuff! First I want to share a FUNNY video that I found while researching. I was cracking up. LOL
So, I did a Google search under “baby pooping too much” and I found a whole bunch of cool stuff.

Through all of my reading, I am seeing that there is a WIDE RANGE of normalcy concerning babies and how often they poop. As long as everything has been properly digested than there is no cause for concern. My son may just need some time for his body to adjust to eating baby food on a regular basis.
Have you ever had to go through this with your baby? I would love to hear about it and if it lasts. I need to prepare now to buy out all the diapers here in NY, especially at the rate my boy is going. 🙂
I always love to hear your comments. And if you are in need of a good book check this one out! It is available both as downloadable Kindle and Paperback. And I included a couple other fun products as well!
There are times when I feel like my son is pooping too much, but it never last longer than a few days or a week. Keep and eye on him and see what’s coming out and the consistency (gross I know). Also talk to pedi and see what they suggest.

LOL! That’s too funny- you’re too funny 🙂 My son burps up sooo much- he’ll burp up an entire nursing session. He spits up more than DS1 ever did. It’s crazy AND amazing how different they are. He’s also a wizzer…not so much on the doodies tho’ but he’s definitely a heavy wetter…he’s a little fluids guy! I get tired of changing dipes too- which is why ECing (Elmination Communication) has been somewhat helpful. I have a post about it on my site. check out diaperfreebaby.com – I interviewed the author. Just saying. Thanks for making me laugh and relate. 🙂

I am currently going through the same thing! I was just looking up frequent pooping for my 7 month old and came across your blog…thanks by the way 🙂 Made me feel better. this week, my hubbie and I have noticed a marked increase in Laina’s poopy diapers. She never goes an excessive amount in them now like she did, but we are changing 8 or 9 poopy diapers a day at least. About half of them are small, but still. It’s getting ridiculous. She didn’t poop this much when she was a newborn!
BYW, did your son’s poopy diapers slow down eventually?
Hello Julie, I can relate to your frustration. The amount of diapers we were going through was nuts. And diapers aren’t cheap! 🙂 But to answer your question, yes, the frequent poopy diapers eventually slowed down and he became regular after about 2 weeks. I really have no idea why that happened because I did not change anything in his diet – he was only drinking milk. But I imagine that they go through growth spurts, and their bodies change. Good luck! I am sure things will even out in no time. 🙂

My 6 month old daughter has just recently gone from being a “one good poop a day” girl to pooping everytime she drinks a bottle… which is 5 times a day. We haven’t yet started her on any cereals so I’m just wondering how her formula would all of a sudden be making her poop everytime!! So strange how their little bodies work sometimes! And I gotta admit too, I’m not at all enjoying the stinky diaper changes so often!
I have an 8 month old daughter. We are now on about day 25 of her pooping a lot. She poops at least 3 times a day and at most 8 times. At the beginning it was higher, but now she’s at like 3-4 times per day. We have taken her to the doctor twice, we have switched from Similac Advanced to the Similac milk based for lactose intolerant formula, then now we are on a generic soy based formula for lactose intolerant babies. Nothing is really helping. The only foods she is eating now are bananas, sweet potatos and rice cakes. She has eaten those just fine in the past and we know she isn’t allergic to them, but nothing is helping. The Dr. said to leave her on this soy formula for another two weeks and then she wants to send my daughter to a GI specialist. My wife and I don’t want any tubes stuck down our baby’s throat, but we are really worrying. My daughter still actually gained a pound, and is not dehydrated at all. She’s acting perfectly normal except she just poops all the time. I just wonder, is 3-4 times a day normal? Should we keep taking her to the doctor, or is this just because her digestive system is developing?
my son is 2months and a half. he has recently started pooping like every after each feed. sometime small but should i be worried?
Not at all! Don’t you worry. Babies go through all different stages as they are growing. He may poop a lot for just a short time and you will see that it evens out. This is what happened with my son. I think pooping a lot is better than being constipated. My daughter struggled with that as a baby and it was a nightmare.
If you see that the poop is watery and border line diarrhea and continues for more than a day or 2, than I would suggest contacting your pediatrician just in case. But if it is regular poop and your son doesn’t seem to be in pain – then just wait it out.
I know it can be frustrating because it seems like you are changing diapers non-stop. But as I always say – this too shall pass.
Good luck mama! DAWN
My 2 month old started pooping from 1 times a day to every time she has formula. She is 100% formula fed. this is happening since 2 days. No other sign like fever or vomiting. So don’t know why this is happening.
My daughter has pooped a TON from day one. she has never gone a day without pooping at least once and she is almost 16 months old.
I was never truly concerned about it but I started to wonder why people would wait and wait for their babies to have one bowel movement when my baby was having them after every meal and sometimes in between. i mean literally, she poops/pooped about 4-6 times a day every single day.
i go through diapers, wipes, and diaper disposal bags probably six times faster than the average mom.
hi everyone .. i have a 3 month old daughter who keeps passing stool all day long when she is awake .. when she is sleeping she passes neither stool or urine ..
she passes little little stool when she cries or sneezes .. its like coin sized . because of this her butt is always red as i have to wipw almost eevry 15 mins … does anyone have a baby who did this or can anyone suggest some remedy ?? could she have a problem ??
i use cloth diapers during the day and disposable at night .. i also give gripe water to my baby .. my friend told me it might help .. when i started giving it she pooped only once a day now again she has started pooping 10-12 times .. watery but not smelly ans sticky ..
As I said in my post, babies go through phases. Your daughter may be going through a bit of a growth spurt. I would not worry if she is not going through any discomfort. Gripe water is great as well. I have used that for all of my children.
The only thing that concerns me is that you say her stool is watery. If she has diarrhea for an extended period of time, then she could get dehydrated.
But if she has no other symptoms and is pooping at a normal consistency but just a lot, then there is really no need to worry. She will get more regular over time. I have had 4 children myself and I know it can be frustrating, but it really doesn’t last forever.
The big thing will be keeping the diaper rash under control. I suggest not using wipes if she is very irritated. Just use bring her over the sink and use your hand with a little gentle soap and water. Then pat dry with a soft towel. And be sure to keep a coating of desitin or other diaper rash ointment on her so that she can heal.
I wish you all the best!

I know this is an old post, but my son (7 1/2 months old) is now going through exactly the same as you daughter did. He is now on day 15 of pooping 6-7 times a day. I’m very curious to know how it turned out for your daughter.
Thanks,
Sathish
Hello Sathish. It was actually my son who had the pooping problem. It seemed like it lasted FOREVER, but really it was only a couple weeks and things wound up getting better. But every baby is different. Mine was only a few months old when he was going several times a day.
Since yours is 7 1/2 months, I wonder if maybe his body is just getting adjusted to food as opposed to milk.
I can assure you though, that usually the problem does work itself out. If you do not see a change and are concerned, then feel free to set up an appointment with your pediatrician.
Hello. Sathish, I was the one with the 8 month old daughter pooping a lot. We actually never went to the GI specialist. We kept her on the generic (walmart brand) lactose free soy formula and eventually that got her down to pooping about 3 to 4 times a day. We also kept feeding her basically sweet potatos and bananas for a long time. The roughest part was the diaper rash. We tried about everything for that. The doctor had us dabbing on some Mylanta (yes the antacid liquid), air drying it with a fan, then layering on A&D ointment and Desitin on top of that. It took a while, but as the other post above said, it passed and she grew out of it. Eventually when she was old enough, we got her tested for food allergies, and she is not allergic to anything!!! So basically I think it was her body just getting used to eating food and not liking formula. After we went to whole milk and regular food, she is just fine now. She still poops more than some babies, at least once, sometimes twice a day, but now there is no diaper rash and her poop is more of a regular consistency. I am happy to say, thank God, that she is 16 months old now and pretty normal. I know this is a very stressful time, but I would say just try to stick it out. Right after she would poop, we would even just take her diaper off for a while and stick her in her playpen on some towels to let her rear air out. You may try that and the three layer approach for the diaper rash. And then I would just stick with that non lactose soy formula until you can get them on some whole milk.
Oh I also want to say I agree with the admin using the sink. We started just spraying my daughter off in the sink after she pooped. I know it’s kind of gross, but it is a lot easier on them than wipes. Also, just be sure to keep your baby hydrated. We kept giving her pedialyte and water all the time. Luckily my girl loves her water. 🙂
I am caring for my 12 month old grandaughter. She poops 6 to 7 times each day and has been doing this since she started eating food at six months. She even poops in her sleep. I have asked the parents to check with the Pediatrician. She is gaining weight and seems to be fine, but is always hungry. She poops after every meal and after both her naps. These are full diapers. Any suggestions……..
I have a 6 month old and since the past 10 days hse has been pooping close to 8 times in the day. She has expresed milk during the day and the rest of the time apple mash, veggies mash, cerelac etc. the consistency is semi solid. she does not seem to have any pain but is starting to develop a rash. Is this normal or is it some infection?
Hi, My daughter is one yr and 3 months old and it is the same with me now.
She poops after every meal and since am trying yo train her i make her sit on the potty almost at the end of every meal and eventually she poops
Docs suspect lactose intolerance hence I started giving her 90% lactose free milk that I get in the market. She does not like having milk directly, hence I add almost 300 ml of milk in her porridge and make it thick so that it can be fed with a spoon and try to give her twice a day.
But many a time she is bored of this and refuses as well.
I also do add a bit of butter in her food and sometimes give her cookies etc.
She is otherwise active and growing well but since i have not checked weight am not sure about the weight gain. Till I breast fed her (1 yr) i don’t think she had any problem in her weight.
Now am worried is this pattern a matter of concern. Please let me know.

My 6 month old had been pooping non stop for the past few weeks, during the day and in the middle of the night (his first one early in the morning (4 or 5 am)), which prevents him from getting a full night sleep. The Dr. said it’s because we have begun to introduce veggies (peas, lentils) and they have lots of fiber. He mentioned nothing about switching formula so I’m going to give a little longer hopefully it works itself out. It’s funny what desperation brings us to – tonight I was wondering why they have extra absorbent diapers for pee but not extra high diapers for night time poops – it’s not a pleasant surprise to find poop on your baby’s back in the middle of the night; Hopefully pampers reads your blog lol.
I can so relate Anna. And I am sure things will settle down for your baby. It takes time for their bodies to get used to the new foods. I wish you all the best sweety!

My son is 9 months old and has been pooing every day up to 7 times a day we have seen doctor after doctor and tryed a gluten free diet which worked but he was tested negative for an allergy so back on the gluten he went and continued pooing alot. We have now been suggested lactose free formula which we are going to try 🙂
My son is already 15 months old and he has the same issue with pooping a lot that started when I was “forced” to stop nursing and changed soy formula for soy milk and eventually regular milk when he was one. My main concern is the diaper rash. It has been pretty bad at times. I guess the little tommy has to get used to all these changes.
Haha funny post.. sounds SO MUCH like me nowadays! Hubby says get an appointment with the pedetrician because its not normal. But because our baby looks okay and happy, I don’t think it’s needed. I searched for the subject and came accross your post – after reading it and the comments, I do think it’s normal.. I dont think we should worry. 🙂
I am so glad that my post could be helpful for you!
hello there i have a 10 months old daughter she is pooping like 10-12 times a day and she has got a very bad diaper rash i dont understand what to do i am very much scared and usually at night she poops every after 5 minutes please do suggest what to do!!!!!!!!!!
We have a 10 month old foster daughter, we got her when she was 11 weeks old. She has always Pooed a lot, up to 10/ 12 loops a day, always changing her.. the colour is a dark greenish. Can any one help, this couldn’t be normal.
I would read through all of the comments on this post so you can see that this does happen to a lot of babies and it will change eventually (thank God). 🙂
Please do not ignore your child’s poops, push your doctor to examine further if no know allergy is found. My son always pooped about 6 times a day and I reported it to the doctor over and over again. Because he was growing and very healthy she said it wasn’t a concern and probably just a dairy allergy. I forced her to do a stool test and nothing was found (since she was testing for parasites). In April 2011 I took my son (who was 4 and a half) to the hospital with a bad cough and fever, not only was he diagnosed with pneumonia, he was also diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) a serious genetic disease. If I had known that his poops were a classic symptom of CF and if my doctor took the time to investigate further my son could have been diagnosed earlier. If you think there is something wrong with your child’s poops don’t stop investigating until you have resolved the issue.
Thankyou Veronica. I did not realize that frequent pooping in a newborn could mean Cystic Fibrosis. Wow!
glad I read this post. My baby is just about to turn 6 months and I’m on a week now of poop at least 6 times a day. I took him to the Dr and he said that maybe its a bug or a virus but he’s eating and no fever so keep on changing diapers. I think by week 2, if things don’t slow down I may go to the Dr again…haha…it just seems so strange! He used to be a 1 a day kinda guy!! Oh those were the days…..

on week 2!!! Doesn’t seem to be slowing down. He has his 6 month needles on Monday so I guess we’ll be talking poop again then.
Oh and of course I have been googling like a mad woman to see if this is normal……and well……I just shouldn’t google. (glad I found your page though 🙂

I can so relate Lori! I am a big “Googler” myself, especially when it comes to dealing with my children. It can be super helpful, but it can also be scary to see some of things that are out there. I wish you all the best and hope the pooping starts getting more regular for your baby!

I was worried until I read this plog, but I can’t say that I am 100% feeling fine with the frequent pooping issue. Specially that my son is not gaining wieght! I understand that the body can adjust to new diet, but what about not gaining weight?! He is becoming taller with no enough weight which makes him looks smaller and smaller for the last month! I really pray God that this will pass quickly and he will go back to normal grwoth. As for the rashes, I have tried this and it works like magic! a little bit of olive oil after each change and the redness will eventually go in no time..Thank you Dawn!
Hello Lubna. I do hope that things will improve for your son and that he will start gaining weight. If you have a concern, I would have him checked out by his pediatrician. It is most often nothing and changes over time, but it is better to be safe. I wish you all the best!

Oh yes Isabelle. I have noticed that the smell is different when it is softer. I understand your worry and concern. It is not easy when our children are going through different things. There are many reasons as well as to why it could be happening. Sometimes it could be nothing at all – just a matter of your child’s digestive system growing and going through changes, but if you are concerned, I would check with your pediatrician to be sure. Good luck mama!

My 3 months old son used to poop once a day until 10 days ago he started to poop after each feed. Initially his poops are watery with mucus ad we brought him to see his paediatrician who prescribed Smecta. His poops now are not watery but the frequency is still not back to the good old days of once a day.
i also have a 9 nomths boy that poops a lot 3 times a day
i think i also need help
My son is a year and eight month old he poops 4 to 5times a day and has lost so much weight and still cant talk he cant even say mama plssssss what should i do am worried since he is almost 2years old mbok what should i do.
My daughter suddenly started pooping like mad after she had one of her rotavirus vaccines. It could be coincidence, but for a MONTH she was pooping watery, diarrhea-like stools for up to 12 times day. She developed bad diaper rash, and it got to a point where each time she pooped, I had to gently wash her bottom and put cream on, because the baby wipes were an irritant on her red behind–it took ten minutes just to change her diaper! It did eventually clear up, but it lasted weeks and weeks. I did not give her pedialyte, but continued with the formula (she was on formula at that point). She was fine in every other way, no fever, no crying.
When it cleared up, she was back to pooping every 2 days or so, her default. Recently she started to poop more often, she’s now at 2-3 times a day max. *sigh* Well, as long as she seems healthy and thriving, I’m not going to eat my liver out.
The diaper rash is what can be extremely troublesome about the pooping too much situation. The more they poop, the worse the rash can get. Not using wipes is the best thing you can do. It really does wind up working itself out over time. As long as the baby is healthy, then you should be fine to just wait it out. But if there is ever a concern you should see your pediatrician. Good luck Liz! ~DAWN
My daughter is 13 months and she’s been drinking cow milk for about 2 months now. She loves it. After she turn one I am constantly feeding her table food. But today I notice a major increase She usually poop 3 times a day.. but today I changed 4 pooped diaper in a time span of just 2hours. She has develop a major diaper rash Shea extremely fuzzy. I tried everything desitine, Vaseline, baby powder. I’m becoming very worried. Until I found this bloq even though its from 2010. I’m glad I’m not the only mother dealing with poop lol. She’s my first born so I’m new at this. Everything I’m worry I google everything. I was wondering if her pooping was coming from her teething? But I’m unsure.!
My 10-month old daughter has been having on-and-off fever for about 2 weeks now. We took her to several doctors who keep prescribing her allergy meds and antibiotics. We give her paracetamol for the fever. She has been pooping more times than normal these past few days, and I have noticed that her poop seems a bit looser and more watery than usual, but she is a happy kind of baby and she doesn’t seem to feel any pain when she poops. Could that be diarrhea?
My 5 month hasbeen pooping upwards to 15 times a day. Her stool is sometimes the same as they have always been, and other times very dry, and other times very watery. It seems like thatgashas ramped up as well! She was diagnosed with reflux when she was 3 months old, so the doctor recomended rice cereal. She loved it, so we introduced baby food at 31/2 months. Up until about 2 weeks ago, she was still normal with 2maybe 3 poopy diapers a day, and now things took a turn for the worse. She ended up getting a really bad diaper rash, so I took her to the doctor, they said for her going so muh she got a yeast infection rash, so they gave us cream for that. Thankfully the rash is going away, but her poopy is still the same. I feel so bad for mybaby girl, and I dont know what to do to make it go away. The doctor said she may have the roto virus, but he didnt do any tests to come to that diagnosis…I was just wondering if any other mommas out there have went through the same thing, or if I shouldnt worry!
Hi my name is Shanna, I have 2 month old daughter, who up to 3 weeks ago was pooping normal like 3-4 times a day, now its about every hour to hour in a half. The first day it started she got a rash with blisters, so I took her in to the emergency room. The doctors said that it was viral gasteritis. They said it should last only up to 14 days and then things should go back to normal. It has been 3 weeks almost 4 and she is going through up to 12-15 diapers a day and even pooping in the middle of the night, which she never did before. She was breast fed for the first month, then formula fed after that. This started 2 weeks after she started formula. I don’t know what else to do. The doctor thinks now that she is lack toss and tolerant, but she is not puking, and is still gaining weight. I am stumped and think that something else is going on. Need some other advice.
Hi Shanna. Sorry to hear you are having trouble. Lactose intolerant could be it. 3 of my children were lactose intolerant and I had to do lactose free formula. It helped tremendously. And if you are breast feeding then try to limit your dairy consumption. Good luck!
My 6 month old daughter is also pooping so much…. I don’t kno what to do… If I leave her for smtime without checking her diaper….. She gets a rash instantly….. Don’t kno what to so ….. And it smells so bad every few hrs she is ready with a dirty diaper and a grin on gar face….!!!!
