Dress Like Your Wedding Cake – Is it Classy or Trashy?

January 31, 2014 by Painter Mommy Leave a Comment

wedding-dress_wedding-cakeEvery bride wants her wedding day to be perfect. You go to every length to make sure your day is special, that every last detail is taken care of. You want your wedding to be unique, like you.  Your wedding dress is beautiful, you have spent hours carefully selecting the best flowers, and coordinating the bridesmaids dresses. And then there’s the cake, the focal point of the reception. You want your cake to look well put together rather than random. In matching your wedding dress to your cake, where do you draw the line between classy and trashy?

While we definitely suggest using subtle elements of your dress in your cake, there is something downright tacky and overdone when you match them too closely.

The cake should match the aesthetic of the wedding, not try to duplicate it in sugary form. We suggest instead that you chose one element of your design and put your focus there.  Using the color of your wedding dress’ sash as fondant sugar flowers on your cake looks stunning, unique and elegant. On the other hand trying to incorporate the sash, the lace top, and the flowers, all into one cake can end up looking like a Moulin Rouge disaster.  If your dress has pearls on it you may want to try a thin pearl border around each of the cake layers, or you may want to use the color of your bridesmaid’s dresses as a tasteful icing ribbon on your cake. If your dress has feathers, go ahead and add some feathers to your cake. If your dress is sparkly and gemmed, bedazzle your cake in a few key areas. Big blooms work just as well as an accent on your cake as they do accenting your dress. Ruffles, which have been wildly popular on dresses recently, can also be incorporated onto your cake by swathing graceful fondant ruffles along the side. You can even recreate that beautiful lace trim on your dress if that’s what you desire. Wedding Retailers such as David’s Bridal has all sorts of styles that would incorporate perfectly with cake designs. Whatever you do, remember to have fun and be creative. Subtly is your friend when it comes to your cake.  Using elements of your dress on your cake is far more elegant and powerful than glomming up the whole cake with matching décor.

Another recent trend which you may want to consider is cakes made in solid colors that compliment your bridal colors. If you are feeling gutsy this may be the cake for you! Martha Stewart Weddings has tons of great cakes of this sort to choose from. Especially with this option, however, remember to be subtle.  If you are going with a non-traditional colored cake, bedazzling the cake or adding tons of decorations may be a bit over the top.  While this may appeal to every five year old girl’s fantasy, chances are it is not the look you are going for.

At the end of the day it is your wedding, create the look you want, do what your heart desires and have fun! Just don’t go overboard.

Wellies and Waterproofs: Get Kids Wet Weather Ready

March 21, 2013 by Painter Mommy Leave a Comment

This is a sponsored post focused on those living in the UK (in case you notice some verbiage or spelling that those of us in the US are not familiar with).

Those notorious ‘April Showers’ are fast approaching – although the fact of the matter is that we can expect rain pretty much every month of the year in the UK! Make sure your kids are wet weather ready with waterproofs and wellies to wear when it rains (and try saying that ten times fast!).

With the right clothing and kit, wet weather can be great fun. Embrace those puddles (perfect for jumping in!) and don’t let the drizzle stop you from getting out and about with your little ones. After all, if you did, you’d get cabin fever pretty quickly! Just make sure that the kids stay dry, warm and comfortable with the following rainy day essentials:

Wellies

The number one rainy day essential is a great pair of wellies. Keep little feet dry with a pair of sturdy, comfy wellies that are ideal for playing out in the puddles. You’ll find a selection of wellies to choose from at George, including fun character styles such as the cute yellow JCB character boots – perfect for little digger fans! For older kids, keep it simple in classic black, navy or khaki.

Thick welly socks or thermal socks are a must for keeping feet warm and comfy when it’s pouring out. Make sure that you stock up the sock drawer with snugly pairs for toasty toes.

Umbrella

Kids will love holding their own umbrella, especially if featuring their favourite character from book, TV or film. Let them choose their own for added fun factor.

Raincoat

There are many different types of raincoats available. Anoraks are a popular choice for keeping kids completely shower-proof, as are ‘pac a macs’ which are super handy for popping in a bag or rucksack.

Some thicker coats will also have the added benefit of being shower resistant. Check the details when choosing your child’s coat, to be sure that it will withstand those inevitable spring showers.

Thermals

On rainy, grey days, even in spring, the weather can bite – and as adults we know that there’s nothing worse than being cold and wet. Help keep out the chill with thermal vests and t.shirts, to keep little ones warm, comfortable and healthy when out and about in less than cheerful spring weather.

Gloves

While a good raincoat will keep the body dry, hands can quickly be soaked in the rain. Gloves don’t have to be a winter only staple. Ski-style gloves and mittens can be great for keeping little hands dry.

Wet Weather Onesie

The all-in-ones fad continues to run and run, so what could be better that a waterproof onesie that will keep kids dry and stylish? You can find cute kids all in ones online and on the high street, in a variety of colours and designs, to keep the rain off from top to toe!

Don’t let spring showers keep your kids indoors. There’s great fun to be had this spring, even in the rain, if you dress them for the wet weather. Just don’t forget your own waterproofs and wellies, as no one likes a soggy mum and dad!
